ALGES-AMTC and NLHPC-CMM laboratories have started collaborations

The laboratories ALGES of AMTC and the NLHPC of the Center for Mathematical Modelling have started collaborations to develop technologies related to supercomputing and High Performance Computing (HPC).

A few weeks ago, the NLHPC launched a competition in which participants were invited to be the first to test the capacities of its new supercomputer called Leftraru.  (Leftraru llegó y queremos invitarte a probarlo )

The ALGES team sent a proposal, which consists in the acceleration of methods of simulation for the quantification of uncertainty in the evaluation of fields. “A couple of days ago we received the news that our proposal had been accepted as one of the winners, with which we receive privileged access to test the new machine and establish relationships with the NLHPC administrators», points out Óscar Peredo, Resaecher at the laboratory.

Additionally,  it was granted a special access to 12 Intel Xeon Phi (720 CPU cores x86) co-processors to be used on test mode in applications that ALGES has developed to run on these kind of platforms.

“We hope that this collaboration allow us to improve our applications and help the scientists and engineers solve bigger and more complex problems, thanks to the higher compute capacity available in the country», points out Óscar Peredo.

In this work a flexible strategy for the execution of legacy codes is proposed, using strategies of super-compute and our implementation based on Python code, C and Fortran. Its objective is to support and improve the process of geologic modelling through the use of a bigger quantity of simulation data, making possible addressing problems that today can’t be solved.
