Conicyt renewed in February the financing granted by the Associative Research Program to the National Laboratory for High Performance Computing (NLHPC).
The project, led by the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of Universidad de Chile in conjunction with other 16 associate institutions, received funds for over two million dollars that will be delivered in five parts payable yearly and will allow its functioning for five more years. Thanks to this, different scientific groups and public and private institutions will continue to have at their disposal high performance computing to conduct their research.
“We have to further improve our services by offering HPC of the highest standard. To achieve this, we are following from close what other supercomputing centers in developed countries are doing and creating our own solutions, here in Chile”, explains Ginés Guerrero, the new executive director of the laboratory, when listing some challenges.
In addition to continuing strengthening its links with universities and research centers, the work of the NLHPC seeks to reinforce their links with the public and private sectors. To the agreements with the Ministry of Public Works and with the Education Quality Assurance Agency, conversations with other governmental entities are being added. Also, the director indicated that they will apply to new governmental, international and private funding so that their infrastructure remains at the leading edge of technology.
The unit will continue its outreach work, through more courses and workshops, such as the one that was held in January 2016, which doubled its participants in comparison to the previous year.
New leadership
The NLHPC has a new executive director: Ginés Guerrero, doctor of Informatics from Universidad de Murcia, who arrived in Chile on December 2013. Back then, he joined the NLHPC as technology manager and, from July 2015 through March 2016, he served as deputy director. He will replace Eduardo Vera, new director of International Relations of Universidad de Chile as from December 2015, in the executive direction of the project.
