During the days 19, 20 and 21 october this year, the Cultural Center Gabriela Mistral will be the stage for three days of this spectacular encounter that will soak the city in science and knowledge. We talk about the III International Conference on Scientific Culture, activity that seeks to convey science to citizen discussions, in a simple and close language.
Everyone interested in science will have the opportunity to enjoy 12 different talks, given by distinguished scientists and national and international scientific figures, who will address themes as diverse and interesting as astronomy, physics, biology, neurobiology, space exploration, nanotechnology, mathematics and chemistry, between other areas of knowledge.
NOBEL PRIZE
Nobel prize in Chemistry 2009, Ada Yonath, will be in charge of kicking start the third version of the International Conference on Science Culture, with his inaugural talk named “The rewards of Curiosity” (Monday 19 october at 12:30 hrs.), in which she will share how the curiosity she cultivated from childhood helped her resolve one of the most relevant structural problems of biology in the last years.
Ada Yonath is the fourth woman in history to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Her contributions have made possible big advances in the structural biology field and have allowed the acceleration of scientific investigation in the area of the protein synthesis and the design of new antibiotics.
WORLD CLASS SCIENTIFIC DIVULGATION
Amongst other guests to this Conference stands out the irish aerospace engineer Laurence O’Rourke, who possess a vast trajectory on aerospace investigation, particularly on comets and asteroids. From United States arrives the microbiologist Jonathan Eisen, who works in human microbiota and studies how bacteria relates to its hosts.
From Spain, the chemist José Manuel López will be present, creator of the successful blog of scientific divulgation ‘Scientia’. José Manuel has received multiple awards and recognition for its great work of scientific divulgation and in this opportunity will give a talk in which will tell us how biotechnology can help find a cure for the rarest of diseases. Also, we will count with the participation of the physicist Javier Santaolalla and the mathematician Eduardo Sáenz, both spanish and members of “The Big Van Theory”, group of scientists that through monologues and stand up comedy routines- will be performing in bars and theatres, explaining mathematics, engineering, and physics in a joyful and entertaining way.
Adding to this renowned group of guests will arrive to this Conference José Edelstein, Theoretical Physics professor at Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. His work has been embarked to studying the foundations of the gravity theories, that try to join the two main physical theories of the XX century: Quantum Mechanics and the Relativity Theory.
CHILEAN SCIENCE
Amongst the national guests will be Mario Hamuy, astronomer at Universidad de Chile and director of the Instituto Milenio of Astrophysics ; Luis Larrondo, biochemist at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and director of Núcleo Milenio of Integrative and Synthetic Biology of Fungus; Andrés Couve, neurobiologist at Universidad de Chile and director of the Instituto Milenio of Neurosciences and, scientists from Universidad Andrés Bello, José Manuel Pérez –expert on nanotechnology– and Gabriel León, plants molecular biologist, scientific disseminator and director of the Center for Science Communication of UNAB.
The talks are directed to all kinds of audience, will count with simultaneous translation and are free of charge, previous inscription.
